When Extremists Attacked Ruth’s Village |
Boko Haram attacked Ruth’s village in 2013, killing several hundred people and burning buildings, including Ruth’s church. She said the Islamists were angry because Muslims in her village of Gowza had been turning to faith in Christ.
Ruth’s family, including six children ranging in age from 2 to 16, survived the attack and then walked 17 days to reach safety in Cameroon. Her husband was never the same after the attack, and Ruth believes the lingering effects ultimately led to his death in 2021.
With help from The Voice of the Martyrs, Ruth attended discipleship training with other Nigerian widows, receiving encouragement and support through God’s Word. As Ruth learned biblical approaches to forgiveness and saw the change in other widows, she was gradually able to let go of her own pain.
“I never thought I would ever forgive Boko Haram,” she said, “but I did. I have not only forgiven them, but I love them.”
Boko Haram continues to carry out devastating attacks on Christian communities in northeastern Nigeria. They are also reportedly supporting ongoing attacks on Christians by militant Fulani Muslims.
When our brothers and sisters in Christ are driven from their homes by violent attacks, you can help provide basic medical and personal care items that they need. Today, we invite you to help displaced Christians by giving to help meet their unique needs or providing a Family Med Pack. VOM workers in hostile areas and restricted nations distribute these Family Med Packs to persecuted Christian families that have suffered extremist violence, like Ruth’s family. |
